Spring is just beneath the snow piles and the time for hibernation is over! Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, March 14, which, incidentally, also happens to be around the time that bears begin to wake up from their winter-long slumber. Black bears here in Gunnison county will begin to emerge from their dens in mid-March. It is generally the male bears who are the first to stir and leave their dens in search of nourishment after their long hibernation. About two weeks after the males, the female black bears will also begin to surface, bringing with them their brand-new cubs. Thankfully, there are a variety of meals—from winter kills to nutrient-rich vegetation—for the bears to dine on, so be careful not to leave any human food where bears can get to it!
“Bear” in mind, March 14 is the day to “Spring your clocks Forward!”
